This year we are supporting Thames Valley Heartbeat!

St. Luke’s was given a defibrillator in December 2023 and we really value being able to serve the community by having it.

Thames Valley Heartbeat was set up in 2019 to raise funds to purchase public access defibrillators for communities within the Thames Valley. Everyone involved with the charity is a volunteer. There are no salary costs and all the volunteers pay their own expenses. Every penny of the money raised is used to buy life saving defibrillators.

Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of premature death with fewer than one in twelve patients leaving hospital. However, with immediate treatment, lives can be saved. The heart stops because the electrical rhythm that controls the heart is replaced by a disorganised electrical rhythm. The quicker this can be treated, the greater the chance of successful resuscitation.

Cardiac arrest can be reversible, but it’s vital that it is recognised and acted upon in the first few seconds or minutes. Lives can be saved by CPR and the use of a defibrillator.

People are often reluctant to do anything for fear of making matters worse in the event of cardiac arrest, so Thames Valley Heartbeat provides confidence-building familiarisation sessions on CPR and the use of a defibrillator.

We are so grateful that St Luke’s has chosen our charity and more specifically our
Hope@22 project.

Our Hope@22 project was set up in January 2021. This was in a response to the number of clients who were waiting to receive our support who were feeling suicidal or had complex mental health conditions. Since the start of the project 8 counsellors have worked diligently supporting a number of clients each year. In total supporting 130 clients in the last 2 years. The counsellors who work in this project are amongst our most experienced and undertake additional training.

Whatever is raised will make a valuable contribution to reaching out to people in their time of
greatest distress.

Heavenly Father,

You gave your Son to be a light to the world

to bring us joy and life.

Jesus became one with us so that we might know your love;

we pray that, as we see the beautiful lights of Christmas,

these Christmas trees,

and all the other wonderful signs of this season,

we may be constantly reminded of your love

shown to us in your Son.

Amen
